1st Lecture of the 2026 Cycle Celebrated Women of Culture

The Cultural Hall of El Corte Inglés in Málaga presents, on Friday 24 April at 7:30 p.m., the first lecture of the cycle Celebrated Women of Culture 2026, organised by the Anna O. Foundation. This year’s edition is dedicated to George Sand, a key figure in 19th‑century European literature.

The session will focus on the life and work of George Sand —the pen name of Amantine Aurore Lucile Dupin— one of the most influential voices of French Romanticism and a pioneer in defending intellectual freedom and women’s emancipation. As is customary in this cycle, the lecture will offer a biographical, literary and historical perspective, complemented by a psychoanalytic approach.

George Sand was a writer ahead of her time: novelist, essayist, playwright and thinker, she challenged the social conventions of 19th‑century France not only through her work but also through her public life. Author of essential titles such as Indiana, Lélia and A Winter in Mallorca, her writing explored themes such as female identity, emotional freedom, criticism of marriage as an institution and social commitment. Her intense intellectual and sentimental relationships with figures like Frédéric Chopin and Alfred de Musset also form part of Europe’s cultural imagination.

The lecture will feature contributions from Antonia Pascual, graduate in Hispanic and Italian Philology, and Ana Cristina Carlós, psychoanalyst, both linked to the cultural and academic spheres. The presentation will be given by Almudena Gallego, representing the Anna O. Foundation.

About the cycle Celebrated Women of Culture

Since 2012, the Anna O. Foundation —a pioneer in emotional support for women— has organised this annual series dedicated to female cultural figures who have often been insufficiently recognised by traditional historiography. Writers such as Mary Wollstonecraft, Mary Shelley, Virginia Woolf, Simone de Beauvoir or María Lejárraga; artists like Frida Kahlo and Louise Bourgeois; and psychoanalytic figures such as Melanie Klein or Lou Andreas‑Salomé have been featured in previous editions.

With this new lecture, the Anna O. Foundation continues its work of recovering and disseminating the cultural and intellectual legacy of women who have shaped history.
