The Cultural Hall of El Corte Inglés in Málaga presents, on Tuesday 21 April at 7:30 p.m., the first lecture of the cycle XIX Encounter with Archaeology 2026, titled Commemoration of the Millennium of the Kingdom of Málaga (1026–2026). The Ḥammūdī Caliphate. The Meeting of Two Seas: Weight, Art and Faith in the Hammudid Mints. The lecture will be delivered by Salvador Peña Martín, Associate Professor at the University of Málaga, and introduced by Mª Carmen Íñiguez Sánchez, archaeologist, lecturer at the UMA Aula de Mayores and coordinator of the cycle.

This edition of Encounter with Archaeology marks a major milestone for the city: in the year 1026, Málaga became the capital of the Ḥammūdī Caliphate, a dynasty responsible for emblematic constructions that reshaped the city’s appearance and whose legacy remains visible today. The building of the Alcazaba, a congregational mosque and the defensive walls of the medina represented a profound transformation of Málaga’s urban landscape.

The 2026 cycle includes four lectures and a series of guided visits to the Alcazaba, addressing themes such as architecture, archaeology, art and numismatics, all presented by specialists in their fields. In addition, the programme features a lecture dedicated to the millennium of the Kingdom of Granada (1013–2013).
