3rd Conference of the XIX Cita con la Arqueología 2026

El Corte Inglés Málaga hosts the third conference of the XIX Cita con la Arqueología 2026, titled “Artes y culturas de al‑Ándalus: la celebración del Milenio del Reino de Granada (1013–2013)”. The talk will be delivered by José Miguel Puerta Vílchez, Professor at the University of Granada. The session will take place on Monday, May 25 at 19:30.

One of the curators of the commemorative exhibition for the First Millennium of the Kingdom of Granada, José Miguel Puerta Vílchez will present the concept, content and results of this exceptional exhibition, which brought together nearly three hundred pieces from eighty museums, archives and institutions across Spain. The exhibition was held between December 1013 and March 1014 at the Palace of Charles V and in the palaces of the Alhambra.

The exhibition was conceived as a space for enjoyment and reflection on the material and written culture of al‑Ándalus, from the fall of the Umayyad Caliphate of Córdoba to the conquest of Granada in 1492. It was organised by the Regional Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport of the Andalusian Government, through the Fundación El Legado Andalusí and the Patronato de la Alhambra y Generalife, with the participation of curators Rafael López Guzmán and María Jesús Viguera Molins.

Among its highlights was the unprecedented gathering on the hill of the Alhambra of Boabdil’s attire, the Nasrid royal documents preserved in the Archive of the Crown of Aragon, and a wide selection of pieces from the taifa, Almoravid, Almohad and especially Nasrid periods. Manuscripts by major Andalusi thinkers, historians and scientists were also displayed, including the manuscripts of the alfaquí of Cútar, offering the public a closer look at the cultural richness of the Iberian Peninsula between the 11th and 15th centuries.

The exhibition also featured a section dedicated to the inspiring power of the Alhambra in modern and contemporary art, as well as pieces displayed inside the palaces of Comares and Leones, some of whose rooms—usually closed to visitors—were exceptionally opened and explained for the occasion. Professor Puerta Vílchez will show images of all this and reflect on the impact such exhibitions have on the dissemination of archaeology, art history and culture.

The event will be presented by Mª Carmen Íñiguez Sánchez, coordinator of the cycle.
