- Schedule: from 19:00 to 21:00
The Cultural Hall of El Corte Inglés in Málaga presents, on Tuesday 28 April at 19:00, the third screening of the cycle Mitchell Leisen, a director of classic Hollywood comedies, featuring the film “Comenzó en el trópico” (“Swing High, Swing Low”, 1937).
Directed by Mitchell Leisen, the film stars Carole Lombard, Fred MacMurray and Dorothy Lamour, with a screenplay by Virginia Van Upp, Oscar Hammerstein II, Walter DeLeon and Francis Martin; music by Phil Boutelje and Victor Young; and cinematography by Ted Tetzlaff. The running time is 92 minutes.
The story begins during a cruise to Panama, where Maggie King meets soldier Skid Johnson, who convinces her to spend his last day in the army celebrating together. After a brawl in a club, Maggie misses her ship back to the United States and has no choice but to stay at Skid’s place. Something more than friendship soon develops between them, and they both join an orchestra — she as the vocalist and he as the trumpet player.
Skid’s sudden rise to fame quickly goes to his head, distancing him from Maggie and from his friends. He also falls under the spell of the Latin American singer Anita Alvarez and turns to drinking, jeopardising everything they had built together.
