Conference “From the Shelf to the Table: How Supermarkets Become Immediate Consumption Spaces”

El Corte Inglés Málaga will host on Monday, 18 May, at 6:30 p.m., a new conference of the Chair of Commerce and Digital Transformation, delivered by José Luis Ruiz Real, Professor of Marketing and Market Research at the University of Almería and Director of Strategy for Positioning and Brand at the same institution.

In this session, titled “From the Shelf to the Table: How Supermarkets Become Immediate Consumption Spaces”, the speaker will analyse the transformation of traditional supermarkets into immediate consumption spaces, a shift driven by convenience, immediacy, and customer experience. The session will review new commercial formats such as urban supermarkets and hybrid stores that combine retail and food service, as well as the rise of fourth- and fifth-range products.

The conference will also address in‑store consumption, from space design to customer flow management, with references to examples such as Whole Foods and El Corte Inglés. It will further explore key aspects of operational management, logistics, human resources, and profitability, concluding with an analysis of the challenges and future of the model, including sustainability and automation.

The event will be presented by Dr. Sebastián Molinillo Jiménez, director of the Chair.
