Lecture · Chair of Commerce and Digital Transformation

The Cultural Hall of El Corte Inglés in Málaga presents, on Thursday 23 April at 6:00 p.m., the lecture “Immersive Design and Extended Reality Applied to Cultural Heritage”, delivered by Dr. Sonia Ríos Moyano, Full Professor of Art History at the University of Málaga, and Leticia Crespillo Mari, Assistant Professor in the Department of Art History at the UMA. The session will be introduced by Dr. Sebastián Molinillo Jiménez, Director of the Chair.

This lecture will explore how immersive technologies and Extended Reality (XR) are transforming the ways in which cultural, artistic and devotional heritage is accessed, interpreted and experienced. Drawing on several projects developed at the University of Málaga —in collaboration with international institutions— such as Negaciones 4.0, Mural in Motion and the virtualisation of O Grupo do Leão (1885), the speakers will demonstrate how digital photogrammetry, 3D scanning, 3D printing and simulated environments can generate complex, multimodal perceptual experiences.

The session will also address high‑precision 3D modelling processes, the creation of interactive environments in Unreal Engine, haptic devices and strategies for expanded sensory stimulation, as well as the use of data visualisation and experimental AI applications as tools for cultural mediation. These developments make it possible to reconstruct lost spatial contexts, activate collective memory and design accessible technological experiences, particularly for audiences with functional diversity.

From a methodological perspective rooted in Art History and the digital humanities, the lecture will reflect on immersive design as a replicable model with strong potential for transfer to cultural, educational and exhibition contexts, placing the focus on user experience and on the contemporary redefinition of the relationship between artwork, space and viewer.
