A journey through Galician oral tradition, its evolution from its origins

On the occasion of the commemoration of "Día das Letras Galegas" (Day of Galician Letters), this year dedicated to the Cantareiras in Galicia, the music group MAIANAS will offer a special concert highlighting the evolution of Galician oral tradition, from its beginnings to its transformation today.

It will be a journey through Galician oral tradition, with an explanation prior to the performance of the different pieces.

The event will take place on Thursday, May 15, at 7:00 p.m., at the El Corte Inglés bookstore in Santiago de Compostela.

About MAIANAS

They are a group of cantareiras formed in Ames in 2007.

That same year, they released their first album, “Xota de la Amaía,” featuring a purely traditional repertoire.

In 2011, the group released their second album, "Como canta," in which they began to introduce songs of their own compositions, experiment with vocal techniques, and integrate new instruments.

In 2020, they released "De trisca!", with which they toured much of Galicia.

Fala de min! (July 2024) is their most recent work. It consists of twelve self-composed pieces and covers of popular songs. The songs on the new album offer space for "rexoubar," love and heartbreak, nostalgia, and the desire to continue spreading culture and tradition.

The rhythms take us from muiñeira and jota to rumba, habanera, and blues, with melodies that play harmoniously with the voices.

It's a work in which we continue to hear the signature sound of "Maianas," which combines the foundation of traditional tambourines and drums with the Spanish guitar, clarinet, and other percussion instruments.

Maianas are an example of how our culture evolves while remaining faithful to tradition.
