The Reading Club of Ámbito Cultural at El Corte Inglés Santiago de Compostela returns in October with a proposal as moving as it is necessary. Coordinated by Miguel García-Fernández (@lectureo), this new session will be dedicated to “As tolas que non o eran”, the work by Carmen V. Valiña, who will join the event to talk with attendees about her book.

“As tolas que non o eran” is a book about those women to whom history paid barely any attention. Admitted to the Conxo asylum between 1885 and 1936, they were poor, rural, illiterate or simply rebellious women who were pushed to the margins of their time. Through their stories, voices emerge that demand to be heard and invite us to reflect on memory, exclusion and human dignity.

With a careful blend of historical rigor and literary sensitivity, the author rescues lives marked by injustice but also by resistance, courage and the ability to challenge official narratives. A powerful exercise in recovering the memory of the defeated, restoring prominence to those who remained hidden for far too long.

A Doctor in Contemporary History, university professor, and creator and director of PeriFéricas, School of Alternative Feminisms, Carmen V. Valiña combines research on the memory of anonymous women of the 19th and 20th centuries with a notable literary career. Since 2021, the women confined in the Conxo asylum have occupied a central place in her research and outreach work.

An opportunity to talk with the author about the lives of the women who inhabit “As tolas que non o eran”, a narrative that brings back from oblivion human experiences that remained concealed for far too long.
